Poker Rules

In online poker a standard deck of 52 cards is used while playing the game exclusive of jokers. Like games other online games, it is also a game of chance/probability. So chances/probability of getting winning cards is same for all the players.

Card Rules -

  • The ranking of cards is done in descending order beginning with the highest.
The order of the cards is following: Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, Ace. Hence, ace can have either a high or a low ranking.
  • The standard four suits namely: Spades, Hearts, Diamonds and Clubs hold the same significance as no one suit is higher than the other.

Each player is playing against other players and not the dealer. Five cards are dealt to each player and is also know as “a hand”. So the hand which is uppermost in rank wins and acquires whatsoever is in the pot in the middle. Therefore, the objective as a player is to get a hand which is highest-valued hand in terms of value of cards according to card ranking rules.

Betting Choices for a Player -

Each player has to place an “ante” or “token bet” or “an insignificant amount” into the pot before cards is dealt. The reason for betting is that it assures a player of constantly winning something on each hand. The amount of a bet can vary. Now after the cards are dealt a player has three basic choices of making a bet:

  • Call: If a player calls, it means that a player just wishes to bet an adequate amount to match what has been bet since the last time he/she bets. In other words, a player has to equal his/her bet with other players bet. Example: If player bets one dollar in the last betting round but some other player places a bet of two dollars then he/she will have to call for another one dollar.

  • Raise: If a player wishes to raise his bet after looking at his cards, the player has to first call the highest bet on the table and then a player can raise the bet by an extra amount. In other words, a player first equals the bet and then raises the bet by an extra amount. Example: A player start with a $2 bet. If some other player raises $5, he puts $7 in the pot.

  • Fold: If a player decides to fold it means, a player has dropped out of the round and will not play that particular hand. Therefore a player loses all chances of winning the pot.

To conclude the structure of poker betting along with the maximum bets and raises allowed is as follows -

  • Fixed Limit: In fixed limit poker games the betting limits are planned by round. Example: $5/$20 specify that the early bets and raises are $5, and the soon after bets and raises are $20.

  • Pot Limit: In pot limit poker games the maximum amount players can raise or bet is equivalent to the amount present in the pot.

  • No Limit: in no limit poker games the betting follows no structure or maximum limitation the betting or raise.

Players arrive at the end of a round when there are no further raises and all cards are dealt. Now every player needs to open their closed cards and then the hand which has the highest-value wins the game.
