History of Blackjack

Blackjack is basically a card game, where, players try to beat the dealer. Player should have the total of card values, higher than the dealer's; either less than or equal to twenty-one. It is amongst the most entertaining and least complicated games for the beginners. To understand the game, let's try to find out its history.

The true originator of the Blackjack has been a mystery as France, Italy and many others claim to be its originators. There are number of games which might have contributed to the origin of present day Blackjack. It is believed that game was named Blackjack because Jack and Spades were considered as vital cards and also because Spades is black in color. Therefore the game was named after these two cards.

There are games like "vingt-et-un (twenty and one) of France, "seven and a half" of Italy, "one and thirty" of Spain. But the most promising candidate for the original Blackjack is France. It is a common myth that game was originated in France Casinos, during 1700s from French card games "Chemin de fer" and "French Ferme". At that time it was commonly known as "vingt-et-un (twenty and one)".

It was the most admired game during World war one, as it was the main source of entertainment for the soldiers. The game has spread throughout French colonies, North America and then whole continent. The game has progressed over a period of time. And from decades has been one of the most famous table games in America and main reason for it is its flexibility and freedom.

For professional gamblers it was the perfect treat, as game was outstanding playing field, for manipulating the chances and bets. The game was blooming and providing a good ground for the present day blackjack because there was no government guidelines and interference. But in the beginning of the nineteenth century, Nevada government felt the need to control gambling industry, as it was encouraging corruption and crime. Finally the game was written into the law, as a crime.

But situation went out of control and industry went underground and criminalized. Finally the States of Nevada made gambling legal in 1931. Though Blackjack was a private game in the history but around 1915, this game started appearing in the best casinos of the US as a banking game.

Today's blackjack has changed a lot from what it was 50 years back. And the credit goes to renowned mathematician Edward Thorpe, who provided evidences that there was no need of house edge. Thorpe and his contemporaries with the help of computers tried to find out the most beneficial way, to play the game. They tried every possible card combination. The research laid the foundation of a set of moves, recognized as basic strategy and then was customized by the experts over the years. This strategy helped the casinos, in developing counter measures to control losses.

Today, Blackjack is considered as one of the best games in the casinos, and has the potential to catch the attention of the crowd towards itself.
